dopey dog (literally) eating lavender

my 10 yr old staffy ralph wasa bit strange yesterday and was moving a bit slowly, i thought perhaps he was a bit stiff in the back legs then later he was chewing my lavender and told him to stop, he was quite well just not as lively as normal.

today he has sicked up lavender leaves outside and i have googled it to see if it is poisonous and it isn't but says it is an antiseptic, and also anethetic properties. I'm wondering if he is self medicating because he felt a bit stiff and that has made him drowsy/calm,

Anyone else had this with their dog? he does munch on grasses when the fancy takes him like my umbrella bog plant & all my strawberries that i have moved this yr out of reach

    Our Inka hasn't eaten the lavender, but will munch clover flowers and recently chewed half of the dianthus flowers off a newly-bought pot that was in the back of the car with her! She also chews grass (OH thinks she must have had a cow in her ancestry)!image

    I wouldn't worry about it  , lavender has been used for years by us all, it tends to keep us calm and help you if your having problems sleeping .. there no reason it would do any harm as it one of the plants you can eat .. don't let him eat too much it may give him the runs but im talking loads and loads image my cavaliers used to eat the bark on the ground they eat that much I refused too get any more it didn't do them any harm, in fact they also eat snails I was that worried I had a word with the vet he just laughed and said there getting their five a day ;

  • Depending where you are in the country, eating slugs and snails can have serious consequences for dogs. Do have a natter to your vet about prevention of lungworm!

    My Jack Russell used to eat young nettles. Do heed Steve' advice about worming. Dogs can pick up worms in many ways.

    thanks everyone i wasn't worried about the fact he's eating it more whether it could be what's causing him to be a bit drowsy and not so alert as usual? luckily he doesn't eat slugs and snails and he doesn't like toys so has no contact with them on toys & his poos are cleared up straight away (i'm in the south east steve) if he's not back to normal tomorrow i'll take him to the vet

  • Our dogs if feeling a bit dodgy tummy will eat something from the garden, be that grass etc. It could be the excess heat just making him feel off colour but if not back to norm would take him to be checked over.

  • I used to have a husky who ate courgettes. Unfortunately her method of picking them was to grab and pull which usually uprooted the plants. She also loved to pick and eat blackberries when we were out for walks.
