Cauliflower

I have huge problems growing Cauliflower. They start to form heads normally then suddenly the heads turn yellow and the florets begin to open up and grow leggy as though they are going to seed. I try to protect the heads from the light but the leaves are quite narrow. Has anyone any idea where I am going wrong?

I've given up on cauliflowers after two years of trying I only ever got one or two edible ones.

I agree with scroggin and will add that they are probably the hardest 'ordinary' veg to grow well for gardeners.  Planting them deep (right up to the lowest leaves) and firming the soil well around the roots when planting helps.  I think they prefer heavy soils, so clay would be best and light sandy soils are probably going to lead to disappointment.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Trying to grow them myself this year at the allotment, everyone tells me cauliflowers fail all the time, so been reading and trying to do everything right. They like firm soil, a fair bit of water and are heavy feeders - feeding once a week. All of these things when they go wrong can cause bolting, which is what it sounds like you've got.
