Growing raspberries in pots

Hello

The start of my message will appear off message but please bear with me.  Sadly my mum passed away earlier in the year ( following a short illness) which means my life has changed immensely and I have had no time to spend on the allotment since last August.  The allotment has got well out of hand (though I have tried to pop across occasionally to try to keep it slightly under control) and I am now faced with the decision whether to keep it on or not.  I suppose I don't really want to give it up (I have had it for about 8 years) but I have to be realistic (I have a half allotment 125m2) and I have other hobbies as well which I don't want to give up. I was thinking that having a smaller patch in the garden means I could potter in the evenings for half an hour or so rather than having to spend huge amounts of time on an allotment fearing it would get out of control.  I have tried finding someone to share with without success.

One of the last things my mum gave me were some new raspberry canes and whilst it may sound stupid but I don't want to leave those behind if I do give the plot up (they are now 2 years old).  I have a long flower garden but don't really want raspberry canes invading this.  They are Glen Jewel canes and I was wondering if I could dig them up and grow them in pots on my patio.  It is a sheltered area which gets sun from early morning until mid/late afternoon.  I have a couple of small areas where I could grow a few carrots or lettuces, etc but it is the canes which I am most concerned about.  I can probably even fit one of the rhubarb crowns in somewhere.

Has anyone got some advice they could give about the canes or have perhaps been in the same/similar position and how they made the decision.

Yes, you can grow them in pots. The pots need to be a decent size, depth particularly, because you'll need to embed stakes to support the canes. Wait for at least autumn.

The RHS has some information about growing them in pots.

  • Thanks guys, that gives me some hope of saving the canes.  They have fruited really well this year and already have some good new growth coming.  I have the allotment until September unless I renew so would be looking to move them by then.

My Raspberries are growing well in a half whisky barrel (cut circumferentially so it's like a big wooden bucket) - seems to be suitable for about 3 - 5 canes (from one plant originally).

  • Hello Boater

THanks for this.  I won't quite have room for a barrel that size, but I could accommodate several smaller pots (bucket size) so I guess one in each could work even if I have to repot on a regular basis.  Sounds like it is worth a go
