Help

I have recently bought Dianthus Diane but the stems seem too weak to support the flowers, the stem just bends in half. I tried a support but it's not working. Do I return it to the nursery or is it a known fault?

Thanks to anyone knowledgeable

sounds like it's been grown "soft" i.e. under some sort of cover, greenhouse , polytunnel which has meant they've not been subjected to the great outdoors and wind etc.

    Speak to the supplier.

They also feed them up to make a quick growth spurt, that makes them weak, that's what happens when plants are over fed.

I am sure it will be ok, it won't die.

I never buy tall dianthus becasue all of the stems just flop over unless you buy a plant support. Plant supports work very well, I prefer the bushy mound forming dianthus, They have nice short stems and loads of flowers.

We grow them in pots anyway as they don't tolerate heavy clay soils they like chalky, well drained soils.

It should be more robust next year Celia image

The tall ones can get a bit lax - some subtle supports put in in spring for the emerging flower stems will help, or some suitable  planting round them which will do the same job.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
