Tree Stump Removal

Any idea's on how i can get this holly tree stump out or down below ground height. I used my chainsaw to get it this low but the roots will be very deep and probably go under the fence to next door. I want to turf up to the fence but this stump is in the way.

    Basically 3 ways, voyager:

    • Dig it out and cut off roots as you go to make it easier.  Your friends here are a pick-axe, crowbar and a pruning saw.
    • Hire a stump grinder.  Not for the feint-hearted but as you can handle a chainsaw then you should be OK.  I reckon they are about twice as dangerous as chainsaws and not cheap to hire.
    • Get it professionally removed with a stump grinder.  More expensive than above but no danger to you.

Personally I would dig it out.  It's very hard work at the beginning but easier than you think once you get some movement of the stump. image

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Dunna fancy killing myself with one of those grinders lol, i hate using a chainsaw. I'll dig around it see where the roots go.

Don't think that would work in this case, the stump is over a foot wide.

Last year I cut down a tree and the stump was the hardest part. A chap wanted £120 to grind it out, but not till the following week.the next day I had half a day in the very hot sun, chipping away with drill, axe, saw, chainsaw, sawsall, spade, pointing trowel for rooting round the roots, the second half day got it out. The trunk was 20" diameter imageso I canceled the stump grinder man.

We have just cut down a massive bay tree but have decided against stump grinding as it makes a colossal mess all over the garden. We found a guy who can dig it up for us and we were quoted £120 which I think is very reasonable given it is a lot of work.

I think is the safest way to do it being not a professional. We don't know what will go wrong.

I've reported this blatant advertising by @robert.c.hamilton91
I hope he's more attentive in his business - the thread's 6 years old. OP's stump's probably rotted down by itself by now....
