Sickly Rose

I have a standard rose in my front garden, which I planted last year and it produced some lovely blooms. This year it came into bud, but they never opened and also all the leaves have gone. Can anyone tell me what is the cause of this problem

I lost one the same way. It was drought. My fault entirely. Never got round to watering it. Assumed if it had flower buds it was doing ok - wrong!

  • Yes that might be the problem, as I have been away for three weeks in Turkey and it could have been dry while I was away. I will prune it and hope it will survive.

Scratch a bit of bark off with your nail. If it's not green it's dead. Try a few branches.

Strangely enough when a plant is in distress it will quite often produce lots of blooms in an attempt to spread seed before its demise.

  • I give mine a weekly feed to encourage the foilage to keep growing and dead head repeat flowers as well all the time. I find a feed helps new foilage to grow and replace any lost due to black spot. I Alternate between a rose feed and tomatoe feed. My biggest problem this year has been greenfly which i just flush off with the hose. Had a lovely second flush on my golden shower so far this year and hoping for a third.

Touch wood my rose bush hasn't suffered with black spot this year as it usually does have it quite badly. I don't know if this is due to the good weather that we have had for roses this year or because of the fact that I mulched under the bush which apparently prevents the spoors from splashing up onto the leaves.
