It sounds like a pollination problem, very common early in the season and should right itself very soon

As Dove said.
I find that planting borage in the vicinity helps a lot in attracting pollinating insects. I used to notice a marked decline in pollination when the borage went over... but now it has self seeded in all sorts of places so there's always some plants in bloom and it really does a great job.
It does self seed like a terror, but it's easy to spot and pull, and you can always eat it, or feed it to any poultry you might have, or compost it.
I have the same problem , early ones were fine , now they get about 10 cm long and start going soft and yellow at the blossom end. I have heard of blossom end rot on tomatos does anybody know if it affects cues and courgettes. There is no problem with fertilisation and the plants are fed and well watered daily. Advise me oh wise ones..
Sometimes, as the flower dies off and begins to rot, the decay seems to spread to the courgette - so remove the flowers when they've withered and before they begin to decay - that should help prevent the problem.

Thanks Dove , that was my first thoiught , have tried removing the spent flowers but seems not to be making any difference.. Have same problem with a lot of the cues in greenhouse ,although I realise there are always a number of casualties, it would seem that the flowers shelltered under the leaves have a better success rate, the ghouse is protected with coolglas white anti uv.. A mystery I would like to solve.
