Pests on onions - Help please

I found this little insect on one of my onions grown from seed. The onion is obviously damaged beyond repair.

Any idea what it is and how I can protect the rest of the crop?

Marigolds planted in the bed might help a bit - they are "trap" plants and the eel worms might get knocked off that way instead of resorting to pesticides. (Just in case you are tempted).
