Phyllostachys nigra isn't generally a problem, but I have been saying the same about my Phyllostachys aurea for years and now have to eat my words about it. We had a lot of work done on our garden 2 years ago and I didn't realise that the people doing the work had ripped out the timber edging I had around the bamboo. It wasn't obvious as the edging was covered by grass. It was only at the end of last season that I spotted the odd bamboo shoot showing in the lawn. Even then I just snapped them off and thought no more about it. I've literally just come back from holiday today, so the lawn hasn't been mowed for 3 weeks, to discover 2 distinct rows of shoots coming up through the lawn. Next job is to treat all that growth with strong weed killer and then start digging out the main bamboo clumps.
The bamboo had been perfectly well behaved for over 20 years prior to that. It does show that it can be contained - until you have idiots working in the garden. Sadly, these idiots were a long established local garden design and maintenance company.
