I'd definitely consider the ivies (variegated r green... personally I love the deep green one with very long "fingers") Ivy can be a bit "boring" (not to me, I love it, but...), but it can be used as a base for a light weight non evergreen climber like a large flowered clematis.

    Or just plant Clematis armandii.

Hydrangea petiolaris is NOT evergreen, but Hydrangea integrifolia is. Needs a sheltered spot though.

Ot the trachelospermums, jasminoides or asiaticum. Wonderfully scented blossom in summer, evergreen leaves. Also a variegated one, but that needs sun.

  • I was thinking of Ivy but it doesn't seem to do very well in my garden, maybe I have the wrong type???

I don't mind Ivy but I was looking for something a bit different

I would like evergreen as the area in question facing my lounge french windows

I will send you a photo later, thanks

I had the same problem as you - this area only gets a bit of sun in the morning so in April, I had the raised bed built and then planted with evergreen Lonicera and evergreen clematis

  • Thanks Tetley

    Yes it is Black Lace

I am not sure about the soil??? I have planned to move the Pieris and another one in the garden to the front of the house and plant in plenty ericaceous compost.

good ideas I'll give them a try

Would the clematis flower in that position?

    Thanks NKirk

it looks nice, it looks to have established itself quite quickly since April

Variegated ivy would be the obvious choice, some types really are awesome and surprisingly easy to maintain and keep in check. this is one of mine, I love the matte variegated leaves.

Also in agreement with Tetley, a cover of green would highlight your black lace and , I think, look great.

It doesn't look that shady a spot, so I think you can go beyond ivy in your choices. In terms of evergreens you may even get away with Trachelospermum. Hydrangea seemanii (also evergreen) will probably take more shade than that. Plenty of deciduous clematis will thrive there, I'd be thinking of C. alpina types, nothing too rampant or large flowered.

the viticella clematis types work well with shade, but I think all are deciduous.  Will I agree the hydrangea seemanii would be lovely but perhaps too vigourous  for a wooden fence? I was advised years ago to change to the petriolis (sp?) on a north wall for this reason, I wonder now if that was true?
