    The giveaway with Hypericum (other than the yellow flowers!) is the simple leaves arranged in opposite pairs along the stem. Potentilla has palmate or pinnate leaflets.

    It's not H. calycinum (Rose of Sharon) if it's a large shrub Gertie. That's a low growing one that spreads about and never looks very attractive to me.

    Ignore the name 'Rose of Sharon' it means nothing. It gets applied to any hypericum.

    Look at the proper name of any shrub you want to ID.
