Tree dropping leaves since June

Hi.

We have recently moved to a new house and we have a garden for the first time! In the back garden there are a couple of tress which are used to provide some (not a lot) privacy from the house behind. One of the trees however has been dropping a lot of it leaves since the middle of June. It is looking a bit bare now, which is shame during the summer months.

To be honest I have no idea what type of tree it is or how to go about resolving the problem. It came out in lovely blossom in spring and the leaves were a healthy deep red colour.

Any help much appreciated. Photos are below.

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

Looks like a cherry of some type.  I suspect that all that paving so close to the base of the trunk means is isn't getting enough water down to the roots.  You probably need to give it a really good soaking at least once a week from late spring to autumn.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Sorry don't know what the tree is but does it need water or have the roots the roots been disturbed?

The poor thing is suffering from drought and suffocation.  As well as lots of water, gallons and gallons of it each week, roots need oxygen in the soil too image  It needs more bare soil around it - can you remove some of the paving?

Thanks for the responses. It may be possible to remove some of the paving to the left of the roots to open it up for oxygen.Even the soil that is exposed is covered with stones, which I guess will not be helping much either.

It did cross my mind that it might need more water and I have been watering it on a more regular basis, though certainly not enough by the sounds of it.image

To my knowledge the roots have never been disturbed but I could not say for certain what has happened in the past.

Hi Burli24, I meant digging recently so no issue there. I agree with Dove and Bob and would add that if you manage to lift a few pavers to let more water in you could put a bag of compost onto the revealed surface, when watered it will help to give a bit of a boost, the nutrients can drain down with the waterimage

I think I will take a look at lifting some of the pavers this weekend and continue to water it on a regular basis throughout the summer. Last week aside it has been fairly windy recently and I do feel sorry for the old thing. Will try and help it out this summer and hope for better things next year.

One other thing I have noticed after digging some of the soil out is there is a lot of slate pieces in there. Almost if they were put there on purpose. Would it be best to remove these? Or have they been put there to improve drainage?
