blackcurrant propogation

nikki 7nikki 7 Posts: 111

Hello one and all

I've just gathered all my ripened blackcurrants for freezing and have planted some of the hardwood stem cuttings, hoping to increase my stock of shrubs.  I know it should really be done later in the year, but will they take root?  What do you more knowledgeable folks think?  Replies appreciated.  Thanks

I would remove most of the leaves to prevent the cuttings drying out which should give them a better chance.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

I've tried blackcurrant cuttings but they don't take like the others do.

This winter I found a cutting I'd left had spouted. So I stuck it upright in the soil, and it now looks like a healthy small blackcurrant plant, which I'll give to friends. I've had twigs I use as net supports sprout before. It is astonishing how some plants survive.

I planted blackcurrants in spring this year and just stuck some of the formative pruning cut-off branches in a pot of compost. They've all rooted & are ready for potting on. The garden club will be having some Ben Connan blackcurrant bushes on it's stall this autumn image

Many thanks for all your replies.  I'm feeling a bit more confident now about the survival of my cuttings after reading them.  I love blackcurrants and would really like a few more bushes.  So, hopefully I will by this time next year.
