A question about water

At the end of my road there is a pea field. It has not been watered, there is no stream and the ground is not improved much by the farmer. So how do the peas grow to be fat and juicy - I know 'cos did a quality control test...
I spend ages watering my peas and I wonder if it's worth it! Any thoughts anyone?
