my Acer is not very well

I have had my Acer japonica in a pot for about three years and it has been fine, then I heard that they should be planted in ericatious compost so I thought seeing it was getting quite large I would plant it up a size, this was last Christmas. Anyway the leaf buds came out and opened ok, in May I put it in my garden still in the pot and then they just turned brown on the edges, I was told it might be windburn what is this? Or could it be the wrong compost? Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks

very prone to windburn, which is basically the desiccation of the leaves by the wind. They're also prone to sun scorch which looks similar. If it's in full sun , especially with the very hot weather we've had recently, could be this.

Try to keep it in a sheltered site, away from the worst of the wind and direct mid afternoon sun,and , of course , keep it well watered.

  • Thanks hostafan, was I correct about using a lime free compost?

yeah, you got that one right Phil.

A bit of TLC and it'll be good as ever. Fear not.
