What annuals can I plant now that will look nice for a couple of months

dominomandominoman Posts: 150
After a weekend of digging my old flowerbeds are looking much better. This winter we are going to do the whole garden so I haven't done any planting. However I would love to get some annuals in that would look good for the rest of summer at least. Is it too late? What would you recommend that isn't too expensive. The beds are in full sun. Thanks

    Sweet Williams might be good

Go to your local garden centre and see what small plants they have on offer. That way you stand a good chance of getting some flowers before autumn hits.

Sweet Williams are biennials so you won't get flowers this year unless you buy them as mature plants.

try the diy shops like b&q, hombase etc they usually have good deals on annuals that they want to sell off, they usually need some tlc, then last all summer

Rather than B and Q, I saw this online and it looks good value. http://www.thompson-morgan.com/garden-ready-plants

Could someone advise me on what to get? I know nothing about plants, but we have a party in 4 weeks so I would like to have some nice flowers in the borders.

The whole area will be leveled later in the year so I just want cheap annuals

    Thanks for any help!

Better to start a new thread for your query Brian. Many people who might help will miss it if they don't look on this one as it's about annuals image

dominoman- I'd stay away from T&M - the plants won't be 'garden ready' till next year - if you're lucky!

You should still be able to get some things at GCs or diy stores but you're better opting for perennials or shrubs, as any annuals are unlikely to make an impact in that space of time unless you pack hundreds into the space. Patio roses are particularly good at the moment. They can all be kept in a corner till you have the garden redone. image

    Bit of a disaster!

I went to B&Q and bohgt a load of bedding plants, from the bargain basement corner.

Watered the ground well, dug it, added some peat and some balanced fertilizer and planted - then added some slug pellets.

Today I went outside and almost 1/3 of the plants have been destroyed.  Something has just cut them at the base.

What could it be?  I couldn't see any signs of digging so I don't think it was a cat.  Could it be slugs, even though I put pellets down?

I'm a bit upset - after putting in so much work to prepare and plant them all.image

Dominoman, afraid to say sounds like slugs, in this weather there are loads of them!!! Beer traps seem to work best from comments on here, there are a couple of threads about them. My mother taught me to go on a 'slug safari' to see how many many we could get in one night with salt, it was truly amazing how many there are, it made it slightly less disheartening when they had eaten new plants, good luckimage

Thanks!  I used an extra dose of slug pellets last night to stop any more slugs.  I only scattered a few last time.

My only worry is that birds eat the dead slugs and could then be harmed?  Perhaps I should try the beer trap.
