9 Codling Moths in 1 week

Morning all,

I have a 2nd apple tree in my garden and last year the apples were infested with serious Codling Moth and other pest which made the harvest, though still plentiful, un-consumable. Hence I was determined to improve the harvest this year.

Earlier in the year when all the leaves had fallen off I pruned the tree to encourage spacious and upward growth and I am rewarded with blossoming and vibrant foliage. However a few weeks ago, I notice some dried curly leaves and aphids which I tried to destroy by manually locating and cutting the branches off and occasionally jet washing the tree. This kind of worked.

However I have a bigger problem, Codling moth. I know it’s a bit late in the year but I used a pheromone trap 2 weeks ago and within a week I counted 9 stuck male moths. I cleaned the trap out and re-hanged it. Now the question, is this bad? If yes, do I wait for another week and do another count? What spray/insecticide would you recommend?

Also may I mention my neighbours about 2 doors down have a massive apple tree, could this be an influencing factor on the count?

Many thanks for your responses in advance.

Thank you.

Please be very careful with these traps as they trap other things as well as moths, e.g birds who go in to eat the moths and then die in the trap. I stopped using sticky traps in my greenhouse as I was catching butterflies and also a lizard.
