My sweet corn have been in for a while & growing really well. They are starting to throw up shoots from the base. Does anyone know if I should cut these off?

I noticed those, and did a Google. Apparently they are called tillers. The prevailing view seemed to be that they are best left, although there was some disagreement. So I am leaving mine. Maybe someone has done proper controlled trials, but I couldn't find any.
