Pinkcurrants

LeifUKLeifUK Posts: 573

At the start of the year I planted a white currant, Versailles, and a redcurrant, to add to the existing redcurrant, Rovada. Turns out the redcurrant was a pinkcurrant. The berries are smaller than from Rovada, but noticeably sweeter, even though it was grown in a less sunny spot. So, anyone looking for redcurrants, would be advised to consider pinkcurrants. Thanks Waitrose!

As an aside, my Ben Lomond blackcurrants have gone black, but most are hard. I have to wait a few weeks for them to soften, and sweeten. They do get quit sweet, but don't really have a strong blackcurrant flavour, more floral. Maybe I should get another variety next year?

I bought a pinkcurrant a few years ago,you have to let them go a dark pink before picking them that way they will be really sweet to use as they are. I've got Ben Conan blackcurrant and ebony they have a good flavour, pick them when they go soft.

Thanks all. I might replace one of my blackcurrants. Yes the pinkcurrants were ripe, and sweet. I'm leaving the rest as long as I can. The nice thing about these is that the birds are ignoring them. Presumably red means tasty, white and pink means not tasty. I wonder if birds ignore white strawberries? PIty there are not white black currants. This is not such a silly idea, since blackcurrants are not the same species as white currants. It might get confusing though. image

Ah. I bought a redcurrant last autumn which also turned out to be pink. Sweet and nice, but I do love the red berries in a mixed cup image

    Can't trust a label.

Oh I live in France, and it was a local shop, but the plant came from a bigger distributor. The variety was in theory... let me think... London Pride? London Market? London something anyway. Got to look in my diary.

I am not angry, the berries are delicious, but you never know what to do, buy them big (and pot bound), so you know what you are buying, or buy them small (and springy) and trust your luck? I guess it's always a gamble, but I don't dare complain too much. Bought some terrific raspberries at the same shp image
