Dwarf Tomatos

These were sown  1 month ago and are grown indoors. Should they not have by now some side shoots?

Thanks

They don't look dwarf toms to me. They would be bushed out straight away.I think they are a bit late now, by the time they grow and make flowers you will have lost the season.

Next year you could try sowing seeds in April.

  • They are the dwarf type Tiny Tim/Window Yellow Box  & one not shown Red Robin

Andrew have you muddled the labels up, this is Tiny Tim. And even these were a bit late going in, should be picking toms by now. Yours is a cordon type.

I planted some Minibel in April, they are bushy and currently have lots of toms. Planted a second lot from the same packet (only tomato seeds I have so no mix up) in May and they look exactly the same as yours. One long stem 18 inches high no side-shoots, first flowers beginning to open. Both sowings are on the same windowsill, in the same type of pots with the same compost. The only difference has been the temperature. First attempt at growing toms so limited experience, but the two sowings have grown very differently from each other. The first slow and bushy, the second fast and straight up.

  • No, the seeds haven't been mixed up.

I had the same problem when I tried to grow a Urbikany bush type indoors, (no side shoots).

The urbikany's outdoors have good side shoots and are growing well.

Is it possible I have a mix of good and bad seed?

It has been known for seeds to be mixed up, I have a lovely delphinium amongst my echinacea seeds!

Andrew, I think you might have either mislabelled or crossed seed. The two in the photo look like indeterminates to me.

could indoor growing promote more upward growth because of the increased heat and no wind? Just a suggestion?image
