ideas for climbers
Hi there - I have an awkwardly placed small pond with no room for anything but a narrow planter/trough behind it. I want to put a climber in to cover the bare fence behind. I wondered if anyone has any tips. It would be good to get something that didn't shed too much into the pond and wasn't poisonous for the fish. It's east facing and gets a lot of sun. It's also an awkward place to reach so something that looked after itself without needing too much close pruning or tying in would be perfect. An alternative to a climber would be something very tall and thin if anyone can think of such a thing. Would welcome ideas, Thanks.

Should have said - the space is really narrow - about 8 inches
How about a perennial sweet pea? Incredibly easy to grow, long flowering season and then just cut down to ground level in late Autumn. It will happily overwinter in the planter. There are some lovely colours to choose from and the flowers look nice in a vase too.
A nice variegated ivy is the only thing I could think of that would have a hope of surviving in such a small space and not grow out too much over the pond. Any chance of planting something in the ground at the side and training it into the space instead?
You could try planting the absolutely vertical and truly narrow Equisetum hyemale 'Japonicum'... it is also a natural ponside dweller.
