Honeysuckle buds dry + brown

My Honeysuckle which grows in a large trough was infested with aphids in early spring. I treated it (fairly successfully) with a spray for aphids. It has plenty of strong new growth and is well fed and watered but whenever a flower bud forms it turns brown and dry and just crumbles up. The two leaves either side of it turn yellow and brittle as well. Is this caused by the aphids (I can't see any) or is there something else wrong with the plant? What should I do?

What you describe is usually down to lack of water Monika. You say it's well watered and it's in a trough. Containers of any description dry out quicker than the soil, and honeysuckle like a cool root run with plenty of moisture at the roots, a bit like clematis. I'd suspect it not wet enough. A good drench of 4 gallons initially, then 2 gallons every week in a weekly drench should sort it out. Honeysuckle can cope with greenfly attacks if they're in good shape, and mildew/blackspot and the other usual ailments if they're kept moist.

Honeysuckle (like clematis) are plants which, in their native state, grow in damp woodlands - they like their roots in the cool damp shade and their faces in the sunshine.

So often we grow honeysuckle against a fence or a wall and it's roots are in a dry 'rainshadow' created by the wall/fence and they really suffer from drought. It makes them susceptible to powdery mildew as well.

This year we've had a really dry spring and early summer - I've bought a soaker hoze and have put it along the base of the north-facing fence which has a lot of climbers on it, and in the dry weather I'm using it for a couple of hours every other day.  Our honeysuckles are flowering better than ever, and the perfume in the garden in the evenings is wonderful image

  • Can anyone answer my query please, I've just bought a Honeysuckle plant named Henryi, and when  checking it's planting instructions and  type of growing conditions, one website states it's the best fragrant of the  honeysuckles  while another site states it has No perfume at all .Has anyone either got the same variety, or knows which is true, manythanks
