Rose help please

PrivetPrivet Posts: 93

I have what I thought was Constance Spry which had really good strongish scent. I have now trained it up a very small arch and it seems to have lost its scent! I am disappointed because of this, but also because the flowering seems to have been quite short lived. What has happened? Should I be adding something to the soil?

I'm slipping in a cheeky second question here, can anyone recommend a small shrub rose that is scented, has smallish flowers and can be trained up my little arch?

Many thanks

Not sure why Constance Spry has lost her perfume - it could be down to the weather conditions this year perhaps, but that being said I'm finding this to be a good year for fragrance.

As for a rose for your arch - have a look at Rosa Buff Beauty http://www.davidaustinroses.co.uk/english/Showrose.asp?Showr=76

perfumed, repeat flowering and beautiful with great foliage too.  Not thorny so great for an arch.

thanks for that. I absolutely love Buff Beauty, but we had to chop our down last year because it just got too big. I need something with much smaller flowers and a more delicate growth habit really. Thanks anyway

Roses are rather moody and can be more or less scented in different periods/soils/weather. I cannot really say what's wrong with your rose, but I would definitely give it time to settle down.

Lovely scented climber rose in my garden is Mme Alfred Carriere (palest pink-almost white). Lovely and scented bush rose is Blue Eyes (white and purplish-violet, sometimes pink)

Pansyface, I did wonder if I'd inadvertently sustained a brain injury, but partner couldn't smell them either ... phew!

Thanks for those suggestions, I'll take a look

  • Have you given it any water during this very dry spell.  Sometimes I find this brings out more of the scent so it could be due to the very dry weather we are having.

No I haven't Mary, but that's a good point. We've had a few good downpours in the last couple of days But I will certainly keep a check on that. Thanks
