Hydrangea going brown

the blooms on my hydrangea have started going a brownish green colour, I don't know if I have over or under watered!!!! I went away for a week and asked the pet sitter to water but I don't know if it was done. Since then I have been watering every day with the hot sunny weather. the leaves look healthy and dark green. What should I do with browning blooms? Leave them or dead head?

Leave the flower heads on - fading hydrangea flowers look beautiful - and lots of people dry them and use their beautiful muted colours indoors.  Just google 'drying hydrangea flowers' and you'll get lots of ideas.

But yes, I agree with Verdun, that pot's too small and I too would use John Innes Ericaceous compost for hydrangeas.

Perhaps put a saucer under the pot?     Also, is it too hot for it situated next to your barbecue?

  • Thanks everyone. Will get a bigger pot as suggested. The bbq hasn't been used yet gardengirl6, but I will move it when I do ??????

Hydrangea flowers always fade to grey-green. It's perfectly normal.
