Summer parsnip

LeifUKLeifUK Posts: 573

I checked one of my parsnips, sown end of March, and it had a good sized top. So I dug it up, and found a decent sized parsnip, like a medium sized carrot. It tasted nice, a cross between carrot and parsley, when cooked with other veg in a sate sauce. Odd, I never hear about summer parsnips! Not sure if I will leave the rest, since not much is about in winter. The hamburg parsley are not so advanced though.

Incidentally, it wasn't half hard to dig out of my heavy clay soil. Veggies do seem to like it though.

I have grown parsnips for a couple of years now and despite the belief that they can be difficult to germinate I have always had a good crop, the problem is that I don't want to harvest them until the winter and they always seem to grow huge by then, this season I decided to sow them later in the hope that they would be in prime condition by the end of the year problem is that none of them have germinated with the later sowing. Ah well back to the drawing board.

I did that Barry and havent had many germinate either, when do you usually sow them?

Sorry to hear about the late season failure. Mine took ages to appear, but most did. Mine are under fine netting, one foot high, due to carrot fly, sounds like they might outgrow the netting. Oops.

Having rained all night and most of the day the seeds have popped up, about an inch already. Let's hope.

Is there anything wrong with huge parsnips? I must admit I used to hate the things, but decided to try growing them, and the two I've had recently have had a delicate pleasant flavour, and nice texture. Ones I bought in the shops last year were a bit too parsley flavoured for me.
