Salic trees

my son gave me two beautiful young salix trees in June for my birthday they have now turned brown, dry crinkly and look to be dying. Help what can be wrong and can I save them. They are in an open sunny position facing east/south

Salix need a lot of water and we've had some very dry weather.

Are they planted in the ground or in pots?
