We normally have loads of ladybirds I've also not seen one this year plenty of wasps and bees here in Lincolnshire though

  • I haven't seen any ladybirds this year.  My box plants are normally covered in them.  Also I haven't seen many butterflies.  I saw plenty early in the year but none now and I have lots of flowers they love to sit on.

I've seen loads of ladybirds on the allotment and some in the back garden. I've not had a huge problem with  aphids either this year, there's been some on currant bushes and some in the GH on chillies/peppers but not to the point the plants have been smoothered in them.

I found hundreds of these on my rambling mermaid rose and googled them and found they were ladybird larvae! image I had a massive problem with aphids and was spraying with washing up liquid water three times a day but now I don't have to at all!

Where are the ladybirds? Is it true that how many spots that are on their back is how old they are I was told that as a kid !!!  Or is it a old wife's tale lol who knows anyone here image

I haven't seen even a single one here in my Staffordshire garden.  Mags

PS - I think the number of spots indicates what sort of ladybird it is.

You could always buy some ladybirds to help boost the local population.

A few ladybirds here but not as many as normal. I wonder if we will see more now that temperatures are nearer to the seasonal norm (it was sooo cold here until about 2 weeks ago).

The black aphids are definitely much worse than previous years, green aphids about the same. For the last few days (ie since the arrival of the very hot weather and the start of haymaking in the surrounding fields) absolutely everything (windows, flowers, me) is covered in tiny black beetles. They are not as small as thrips (which will arrive very soon no doubt) but are everywhere. Hopefully they will disappear when things cool down and the rain arrives.

Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
