Wilma Goldcrest small conifers look lovely in containers all year round. Beautiful colour, lovely shape and a lemony smell - they will go brown if left to dry out. They are also really cheap (B&Q sell them) so if something goes wrong you can easily replace. They will outgrow the container in 2/3 years and then I usually chuck them in the border as they look really nice in a border too and then buy some more.
"... If your hardy plant dies after it’s been planted, please do get in touch. As long as your plant has been lovingly and correctly cared for (which we’re sure it has), you’ll be covered by our five year guarantee. Just dig out a proof of purchase and give us a call..."
Note the words "...correctly cared for..."
I just think that if GCs have to replace plants that have died because of neglect (whether because of lack of knowledge or whatever) they will simply put the prices up to cover it.
After all, if you don't maintain your car properly by not having it properly serviced etc, it will invalidate the warranty.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
....and then they knock the money off the nursery who supplies them with the plants.....everyone's a winner ( except for the poor bloke who does all the work )
Wow, Thank you so much guys - I don't know where to start in response to you all, I would feel a bit weird going back to the garden centre 'cos I have a feeling it was my fault they died, I bet I didn't water them as often as I should have, we did have some heavy snow here last winter too, so dunno ... We are going to remove them this weekend so will check what the root ball is doing as you suggested Dovefromabove.
I was wondering about pieris myself Patsy, they are my favourite plants of all time, just to show you all that I can do something right (not a malicious plant killer ) I am going to post a picture that I am so proud of, I love my pieris, I talk to him and tell him how gorgeous he is everyday .... he grew so big that we had to re-pot him into a new big barrel.
p.s. maybe it's all down to the gargoyle .....
Bit worried two of these may not like it round the front, the patio where this one is south facing .... just going to google 'sarracocca confusa' and see what it is ....
