No flowers this year on my Jerusalem Sage

Last year in June I had a magnificent Jerusalem Sage (phlomis) covered in flowers....this year plenty of leaves but no flowers. Can anyone suggest why this has happened?

Is this the shrubby one, Phlomis fruticosa? I haven't got any flowers either. I'm blaming the severe haircut it got last summer and hoping for some late flowers.

Yes, that's the one.......I left the flowers on til the autumn and didn't prune very much. It disappeared over winter and appeared as normal in the spring....but without flowers. I'm in the south and we've had a very dry spring, maybe that's part of the problem.....

    Disappeared?  It shouldn't do that.

Yes I think you're right...I've found a December photo of the bed and there is a small mound of leaves there which I think must be the sage.

It's left a big gap In my flower bed this summer...let's hope you're right and we get some late flowers. I think I might divide it this autumn and pot on a few bits.

I wonder if you have Phlomis russelliana, the herbaceous perennial rather than P. fruticosa a woody shrubimage

Yes nutcutlet you're right again.....just Googled PR and that is the one I have......

Strange that both types are having problems. I had a good look this morning but not a hint of a flower spike.

did you have any luck getting your phlomis to flower? mine has not flowered well in nz for 2 years despite wonderful summers. even the new outer growth did not flower so am doubtful division will help.

This Spring I decided to replace it with something else but potted up a few rooted cuttings to see what happened...... and they've all flowered!!  I'll keep these going  to see what happens next year.

Great. Thanks for letting me know. Maybe I'll divide mine this Spring (September for us) and give it one more chance as I do love it. Annoyingly, a local city traffic island bed of it was a mass of flowers last year. I think I got 2 flowers!
