Pond advice

Hi there I have just moved into a house which has an old unused pond - there are no fish but there is water in it and I have removed the algae from the top but would really like to reinstate the pond and put new fish in but have no idea what the best way forward is to reinstate the pond so would welcome any helpful tips or comments on what to do - thanks

You have not said how big the pond is or what it is made of. I would empty it out, give it a good scrub with a brush, them rinse it, refill it with tap water to the top and wait for a week to see if the level stays constant. That way you will know whether it is leaking or not. If not you can start stocking it with plants and then a few weeks later with fish. Read all you can about keeping fish happy in a pond.

    Good luck!

  • Many thanks for your quick reply - the pond itself is not that big I would say about 3ft wide by 5ft in length - from what I can see its brick built sorry to be vague with the details but this is all new to me image
