June Drop

We have a very large cooking apple tree in our garden that has many small fruits which are falling to the ground in abundance. Is it OK to collect them up from the lawn and add them to the compost bin( it's a bit like walking on golf balls at the moment) with out attracting vermin?

We had a problem with rats last year where they were dragging ripe fallen apples off the lawn through the fence to a disused garden. So far this year we have seen none.

Yes, I would put them in the compost - they'll be fine image

If you've got rats they'll take almost anything edible, but their favourite is potatoes.  Keep the compost bin stirred and damp, and give it a kick or a clout with a stick every time you walk past.  Rats like nice dry quiet places.

I just mow over the applets so they get picked up by the machine, saves a lot of bending!
