Plant suggestions? full sun summer/full shade winter

Leslie ALeslie A Posts: 9

We have a spot in our south-facing front garden--about 15 feet wide, 10 feet deep-- that gets full (baking) sun in the summer, but in the winter gets almost no sun thanks to a row of 40 ft. tall evergreens across the road.

Any ideas what to plant there? I've considered putting in a lavender hedge since it's so dry/hot/well-drained, but I don't know how they'd handle the dark winters.

lavenders are very forgiving they take most weather and they smell great plus they can keep ants down a little

Try Cistus, I have a similar situation in my garden and they cope very well with it. It's often more to with the drainage a plant gets in winter than the sun it gets. English lavenders will do well as will rosemary. Achillea some hardy fuchsia will cope, hawkshead in particular, penstemon will cope as will helianthemums  As I said, drainage is often more important than the direct sunlight.

Thanks for all the suggestions--it's pretty well drained here, so it's good to know the lack of winter sunlight won't necessarily be a problem.
