Red Hot Pokers & Ants

I've got some red hot pokers growing in my garden, they've been growing for quite a few years but the flowers never seemed to last longer and a few weeks. Today while weeding i noticed ants marching up on down the flower stalks with parts of my poker flowers, is this why the flowers don't last long. Do ants do this often and can i stop them with anything.
