Staghorn Sumac

Good morning, I wonder if anyone can help? I recently bought my first house and the garden was a bit of a mess including a requirement to replace all the fencing. There was a staghorn sumac in there that was causing some major issues with the fence. I've taken it down and dug out the main root system. However, in the last 2 days about 20 new ones have popped up on the lawn. They basically all look like mini trees complete with leaves and furry stems. Is there a way of getting rid of these withou digging up the lawn? I've read that this can happen due to long reaching roots but they're everywhere. Thank you for looking, Steve

If you've removed the Sumach and you don't want any more then paint the leaves with weedkiller (SBK brushwood killer would be fine) and leave them to die.  They will give up, eventually.

  • Thanks for the advice. I was really worried I was going to have to redo the lawn. I suppose if I keep on top of the grass cutting they'll not get far anyway.

    Thanks again.
