Butternut squash
in Fruit & veg
I grow in raised beds and veg bags & this is my first year growing veg! Steep learning curve! While using bags for pots I decided to sow butternut squash seeds in a pot. Now the bags are available I am about to transplant the young plants. Just read squashes do not like root disturbance and they should be sowed in their final place! Is all lost? Will they survive?

Yep, no problem as Edd says. I start mine off in 3" pots, transfer to 5" if too cold to plant out and then into their final positions and they don't seem to mind at all. As long as we get more weather like we have at present, they should do well.
I started mine off in a pot last year and after it was planted in the ground before long it was taking over the plot and I ended up with 10 fully grow squashes.
What them above said. 10 from one plant? Cripes. Mine average four.
you can get 10 small ones or four big ones!
10 big ones, in fact one was so big I cut it off as for some reason it was growing round and not butternut squash shaped. The plant itself grew a good 8 foot across and that was with me trying to divert it to grow in a circular fashion.
Four smallish ones in my case.
I didn't pay too much attention to either watering or feeding but the plant just grew and grew. It was the first time that I had grown butternut squash so I thought it was par for the course it will be interesting to see how this year compares to last.
I always grow my Squash in pots to start and then transplant when warm enough into the Veg patch. Have never had a problem other than they spread and take over the area
Thanks to everyone for the help. I decided to take the plunge and transplanted them into final place with minimal root disturbance. So far so good! Cheers Jan
