Lawn invader

I have inherited a lawn, which is infested with weeds, this problem I can solve, what I cant understand are the little gulleys, sometimes 4" to 6" deep, narrow and ending, (or starting) with a circular hole about the size of a 50 pence piece.  The property is surrounded by farmland and my working terrier does not show the slightest bit of interest, so I assume it is not vermin?  Really need help before I break my ankle!

Old mole runs now used by mice sounds the most likely explanation. Dig them out and fill with new soil. Rats can take over old mole runs as well, but the holes would be slightly bigger and your dog would be more than interested. Leave the channels slightly raised to allow for settlement.

Thank you, sound feasible.  Sounds like a fun filled week on the lawn!
