Planting immediately after potatoes

Hi, I expect to be harvesting my Accent first earlies soon and thus freeing up half a raised bed. I'll still have some Wilja second earlies in the other half for a while. Is there anything i can plant in the free half once I harvest the Accents? Seems a shame to leave the space empty. Thanks Jason

Thanks Dave, I have some broccoli and purple sprouting broccoli seeds. Can I show them directly into the ground, our should I start them in seed trays?

Should I mix some fertilizer into the soil first?

    Thanks

    Hi Jason,

As dave suggested; salad leaves ect

Perpetual Spinach would flourish as would Pak Choi (in fact now is a great time to start Pak Choi- tastes great as well, and so easy to grow!)

Have a look around garden centres and see if they have any bean seedlings left- dwarf french beans will flourish in left over potato soil.

Thanks cat, I might look into the bean idea too.

Better started in seed trays Jason, and a bit of something to refresh the soil is always useful, but not too much.

If you use a crop rotation plan then you'd be best planting brassica's which follow spuds. Idea spot for winter vegs - broccoli, kale, swede,, you may still get a crop with kohl rabi and radish are quick to grow.

I sow in modules rather than take my chances with sulgs eating the seedlings, seeds sown in the ground though will germinate at this time of year.  .

Don't put manure in the ground for brassica's, you will be planting up to soon for it to have been taken into the soil. Someone else maybe able to answer your Q about mixing some fertilizer into the soil first, I prefer to water on a home made fertilizer each week.

Also if you like flowers now is the window for biennial flower sowing. You could use it as a nursery bed for them. Parsley can also be sown now for next year, all good winter cover for the ground tooimage

I always follow 1st earlies with leeks which were sown in early March.  Obviously that needs planning in advance but salad leaves or fast growing things like turnips, kohl rabbi or beetroot would be ok.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    Thanks everyone.

I have some broccoli seeds. If I start them of in trays as Dave suggests will they grow into plants in time to plant out, or should I try and find some plants at the garden centre?
