pruning a standard azalea?

My lovely standard azalea, bought for me by my granddaughters, has got really straggly branches, with leaves and blooms at the ends of the branches. I feel that I want to cut the branches back by half and hope that it encourages leaves and blooms. But I am scared of killing it off. HEEEELLLPPPP please!
