Why doesn't my philadelphus smell?

Having nurtured a bare root plant for 3 years it's full of blooms this year but no scent!  As that's the reason i bought it i feel cheated so why?

Can we see a photo? Perhaps it's not Philadephus!

Perhaps it's a Deutzia. They can look very similar, depending on the sort.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Philadelphus have 4 petals and Deutzia 5, if that helps.  I also find that some of the double flowered Philadelphus have a very poor scent.  We look forward to seeing the image!

There are philadelphus cultivars that have no scent. It's terrible, heretic and should probably be illegal, but that is a fact.

Got one myself years ago. Buy philadelphus in bloom so you can sniff it, if you can.

  • I have one which I moved last year but its never flowered  why
