In winter I moved to a new home, with my first garden. Can you tell me what this plant is (not the bindweed in the background)?

Has quite chunky rhizomes; hairy/slightly prickly green stem. Seems a bit invasive.

Looks like my Jerusalem Artichokes, they seem to get everywhere in my garden!

    Thank you all!

Jerusalem Artichokes looks right. They'd been spreading so much that I feared they might be something nastier... At least I can just eat them into submission.

I haven't had the garden long enough to see them flower. But when we moved at the end of autumn there were a few tall dead stems still standing, almost sunflower-like.

Yeah they do that, quite easy to break down though. I'd wait for a positive ID before tucking in though just in case I'm wrong. lol
