Hollyhocks

I have two lovely, healthy looking hollyhocks growing against the house wall.  They are new this year and have plenty of buds as well as the cluster of buds on the top of the plants.  Do I take all the isolated buds off the plant and just leave the top cluster or do I let all the buds come into flower?

  • I assume that by taking off some of the smaller more insignificant buds then the strength would go into producing a few larger flowers - a bit like deadheading so that the plant can produce bigger, blooms from the new/remaining buds.

In my experience Rosie hollyhocks produce nice big flowers regardless of how many an individual plant has, within reason of course. I just let mine do their stuff image
