I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that weedkiller had been used close to where crops on sale had been grown - it could be quite common and we wouldn't know.I've seen field margins of crop fields that appeared to have been treated with herbicide.

Summing up, we won't risk it. I'll bin the runner beans and lettuces (we feel sure we planted the peas after the dreaded spraying), remove the top layer of soil, replace with new, and re-sow.
PS. can I ask you one more question? Where to bin the contaminated plants and soil????
Hi Verdun. Yes, I'm hoping it's ok to dump them in our local tidy tip. Certainly the soil will be ok to dump with the hardcore. I'll check with them whether it's ok to dump the plants in the garden waste. If not, I'll have to try the food waste bin that's collected weekly. It goes to an anaerobic digester, apparently.
