What is wrong with beetroot?

Hi guys,

Checked on my beetroot today and noticed that this is how a lot of it is looking. Is it slugs, disease etc?

    My beetroot are being nibbled away. Sparrows I think, little beggers.

    Jordan - your soil looks a bit dry and gravelly; you may find that even if they do grow they will be forked and misshapen. They like to be kept moist and in a sunny spot. Its not too late to plant a second crop.  image

    The beetroot is in a very sunny position and generally well watered, I just happened to have not been able to get to the allotment for a couple of days.



    But yes, I agree with you regarding the stony soil. The entire allotment is like this, unfortunately! Many others seem to have no issue growing beetroot, so I guess I will just have to see.



    Any ideas what's the marks and jokes are? Do you think it could be sparrows?
