Ivy covering a very old wall. Should I remove it?

There is a vey tall, old wall which is covered in mature ivy.  I need to clear at least some of it away.  The wall could be centuries old and one view is that the ivy could be keeping the wall up and another is that it could pull the wall down or at least damage the mortar.  Where the wall can be seen it looks sound.  I was going to cut the stems of the ivy and leave it to die back in its own time.  Any advice on how to tackle this would be welcome.

I love Ivy and so does wildlife.  I'd leave it and just trim it back when the nesting season is over.

I would do as you suggest and cut the stems leaving it to die back on its own. Then carefully try pulling some off. Good luck.
