when can I move poppies. I was given a plant and have put it in the completely wrong place.

Is it an oriental poppy? if so after flowering, cut it down and move it with a good size root ball and water it in well.
You cannot successfully move annual poppies once they have their roots down but as fidgetbones says, you can move oriental poppies. However, if you leave any of the root behind, it will grow again in that spot.
