Purple loosestrife, weed/wildflower depends on your outlook, I like it so keep some.

I think its Linaria purpurea, not to be confused with Lythrum salicaria, the purple loosestrife you get in damp places and at the side of rivers.

Thanks nutcutlet and fidgetbones, I'm glad its not a weed. Its great for height but does self seed a bit too readily. I'll look out for the pink one!

hi! glad you posted a photo as i've had the same plant come up year after year and never knew what it was.. be warned though, it seems to spread mega-easily; i am forever picking out seedlings and it is annoying when it self-seeds right in the middle of other plants. good luck!

yes Gillygee- I have them everywhere but they are nice but not at the front of the border ! Mind you everything in my garden self seeds and I'm forever picking out seedlings !!I guess I should dead head more often but things like teasels are so nice to keep over the winter and then I have to suffer the consequences !

I know it as purple toadflax. Nice if you don't have too much of it, seeds easily and if you don't want the plant, comes out of the soil very easily with a good tug.

I agree- it's roots are quite shallow for such a huge plant !
