Hi there everyone. I wonder if you can identify this plant. It's leaves are the pointy ridged ones , they look lovely. Then the nice leaves grew a 3 foot long ridged stem with a weird 'flower' on top ! Any ideas and is it poisonous ?

Thanks x

It's one of the plantains. I like them, lovers of pristine lawns hate themimage

Not poisonous. Actually edible (and medicinal), but a bit stringy.

Thank you nutcutlet and Katherine. I didn't know that plantains grew so tall ! Not sure I fancy having a nibble of it tho'.  I'm a bit of a novice at this ! In fact I have a couple more that need identifying !

Nutcutlet- I am pretty sure you are right having observed a lot- that it isn't a bird but a bat ! So fantastic to watch and I put the lights on outside as you said to attract more insects and the bat stayed around for about 15 minutes !

    They are fascinating aren't theyimage

we have more than I thought we had living in our roof. Numbers have been down from the 200 we used to have but we're back up to 50 again which is better than the 12 we had last year

Yes they are. Their movements are almost unbelievable- so agile ! Aren't they noisy to have in the roof at night ?

There are lots of tall trees across the road along a small brook and I think they live there and I know that bat boxes have been put up in the trees so they must come across the road for dinner !

They are noisy at night once they've given birth, they keep coming back to feed the young. Otherwise they're out all night.

They're over the bathroom this year so they don't wake us up. They're quite noisy in the mornings though, social chat. Can here them above the noise of the extractor fan, (not after I turn the shower on)image

That's why I thought my bat was a bird because it just seems to disappear after 15 minutes or so but it is probably because I can't see it in the dark ! I'm not sure I want them to move into the roof though !

I've just been to the opticians and they have an aquarium and one of the fish is holding its eggs in its mouth and starving itself until the babies are born. Cruel that they have so little space to swim around in but fascinating about the babies !

It's just a summer nursery roost JJ, they're not there for long.

    Interesting re the fishimage
