Sambucus nigra HELP black lace not flowering?

We have two beautiful sambucus nigra - black lace elder - shrubs in our garden. After purchasing them in 2013 they grew amazingly and flowered may-june. I then pruned early spring 2014 to around 3 ft and had a wonderful summer of growth and flowering again with them in 2014. Pruned early spring this year back to 3ft again, have had the most amazing amount of growth (they are around 8ft tall and 3ft wide!!) but absolutely no flowers? I have no idea why this would happen - does anyone know if they tend to go dormant for any reason? Any help would be much appreciated!

Probably spent most of their energy on growth?

I thought the choice was either prune hard for the great leaves or leave it alone for flowers

Thanks everyone - ok note taken I won't prune next year. The issue is I had no idea how tall and wide they get (and how quickly that would happen)! They are stunning though so I will sit tight until next summer. Thanks!

Last year I didn't prune mine in March as I heard I would get more flowers. It grew huge and had hardly any flowers. This year I pruned it hard in March and it's a better shape and it had flowers. I think they have minds of their own!
