Acer Deshojo in trouble

Hi all Last year I bought a healthy 5 year old acer Deshojo tree. Now it's starting to die I think? All the leaves have curled up and died apart from a couple. I've noticed there are spider webs all over it and little white fluffy patches on the branches and leafs. Not sure if that's anything to do with it? I'm keeping it sheltered from the wing and am keeping the leaves dry when watering? I would post pictures but am not entirely sure how to do it on this forum? I'm really worried that the tree will die. I've wanted one of these for many years and can't bare to think that it is dying. Can anyone offer advice?

    Hi there,

It could be aphids. I have an Acer Orange dream (I think it's called) and I've had to move it (it's pot grown) as it was a host for white fly. The leaves curled up and went crispy. Used a washing up liquid solution and moved it. That was two weeks ago and although a lot of the leaves were dead looking the less affected leaves have improved. Sounds like aphids on yours you could dry a diluted washing up liquid wash sprayed over the leaves.

Or the fluffy bits could be scale insects which suck the sap.

  • Well I'm sure it's not scale insects. Looks nothing like the images on Google. I'm using a mobile phone for this forum and does not show any tool bars to add picture. The tree has only a couple of poorly developed leVes now. All the rest have all died. I think the tree may have had a little Powdery mildew last year. Could that be causing this issue now?

I'm interested to know what the white fluff type patches are under some of the dead leaves Ian on branches? Some king of eggs maybe?

Well, if it's not scale insects (there are several sorts including white fluffy ones) could it be woolly aphids?

However, if the tree only has a couple of leaves at this time of year it does sound as if it's not long for this world image

Plants usually only succumb to powdery mildew when they're under stress - could it have been subject to a bit of drought last year?

Give it a good spray with Provado Ultimate Bug Killer 2
That'll get rid of whatever it is

I have a little Japanese bit going on, had half a dozen beautiful Acers, a couple did this, I thought they were dead, I moved them to the shade, removed the rest of the leaves, watered,  they were fine.  I thought it was the sun, but gathered it was probably wind-burn.  Two years ago I was given a beauty as a present, it looked dead, gave it the same treatment, but also what i do, is scrape a bit of bark off low down, if its green its still alive, if brown then not, unfortunately this one didnt make it.  There were signs of an y kind of pests.
