My mum's Sweet Peas didn't happen.

DinahDinah Posts: 294

Every year (always without fail) my Mum plants annual Sweet Peas. This year circumstances prevented her. All the adverts I can find are for plants for 2016. I want to get her some near full grown plants to flower this summer. She is in the West Midlands area if anyone has any spare to sell, or if you can point me to a postal supplier doing mature plants.

Grateful thanks for your attention.

They are still selling in the local garden centres in the northwest image

Brilliant stuff! I should have thought of it. I'll contact some garden centre’s near her (she has no car to travel) and see if they will deliver. If there is a market very near her I will propose she goes with her best gardening friend.

Sweet peas are such a magical motivator in all human interactions. I got these helpful responses within seconds!

    Thanks!

thompson& morgan are selling plugs, don't know if this would be of any use or what quality, hope you find some, good luckimage

I checked them, but they seem to be dispatched in Autumn or spring for 2016. I think it will have to be local traders of one sort or another. I know mature sweet-pea plants are very hard to send by post because of root disturbance, brittle stems and such. Thanks anyway, at least she will have some for next year!

one sweet pea seed hass just popped up in my garden in Essex, so hopefully the rest will follow: maybe the weather is upsetting everythingimage

I planted nastursiums at the same time and they are nearly floweringimage

Thanks for that Landlubber, I'll warn her not to plant over them just yet.

My nasturtiums are doing OK - not as advanced as yours, but they recovered from an incredible wind in May, that shredded all the leaves. It seems to have killed off a 5 year old Wisteria too, which had broken bud a bit early after a warm week. I have never seen weather this windy before, both in terms of averages and peak speeds, but then we are mountain, coastal. At least we don't have frosts and floods to deal with image .

    Hi Dinah

If you happen to be in the east Midlands any time soon there is a lady in Calverton with a small holding on Main Street selling large pots full of sweet peas, all planted up with canes. About 2ft high. They are out the front of her gate with a big for sale sign on. Good luck! I agree that they are such therapeutic flowers. The picking, the scent, the colours....so lovely.

Thanks for that Tootles. That is really 'fresh from the scene'  information - wow! image It would normally be a bit out of my mom's way, but she makes great use of bus and train, and has accompanied gardening friends (with a very large shopping trolley) on the train to garden events. I'm sure the trip is do-able if she can't get plants closer to home image I'll pass on all the details - you may see a small group of ladies filling a shopping trolley with pots next time you go past!
